Teamfight Fundamentals — The One Guide That Will Actually Improve Your Win Rate

The Pre-Fight Checklist

Before every teamfight, answer these five questions. If the answer to any is "no," don't fight:

1. Do we have a numbers advantage? (5v4 = fight. 4v5 = don't fight. Simple.)
2. Are our ultimates up? (Fighting without ultimates is fighting at 50% strength.)
3. Is the objective worth it? (Fighting over a tier-2 tower at 20 minutes is not worth it. Fighting over Overlord is.)
4. Do we have vision? (Fighting in fog of war is a coin flip. Coin flips lose games.)
5. Can we disengage if it goes badly? (If the answer is no, the fight is all-in. Be sure you win.)

The average player asks zero of these questions. They see an enemy, they fight. Just by asking these questions before every fight, you'll make better decisions than 80% of the playerbase.

Front-to-Back vs. Dive: Which Comp Are You Playing?

Every team composition falls into one of two categories: front-to-back or dive.

Front-to-back comps (tank + ADC + control mage): your job is to kill the enemy frontline first, then their backline. Your tank engages, your ADC kills their tank, your mage zones their backline. Slow, methodical, reliable.

Dive comps (assassin + engage support + burst mage): your job is to ignore the enemy frontline and kill their backline. Your assassin flanks, your support engages, your mage bursts. Fast, chaotic, high-risk.

The mistake: playing a front-to-back comp like a dive comp (your ADC tries to flank) or a dive comp like a front-to-back comp (your assassin attacks the tank). Identify your comp's win condition and play to it.

The Golden Rule: Don't Fight Fair

The most important teamfight principle in HOK: never take a fair fight.

A "fair fight" is 5v5, both teams have ultimates, both teams have vision, neither team has a clear advantage. In a fair fight, the outcome is determined by mechanics and luck. You don't want mechanics and luck to determine your games. You want decision-making to determine your games.

How to create unfair fights:
• Pick someone off before the fight starts (bush cheese, rotation catch).
• Fight when you have a numbers advantage (enemy split-pusher is across the map).
• Fight around your power spikes (your ADC just finished their third item).
• Fight when the enemy has key ultimates down (they just used them to secure a kill).

If you only take fights where you have an advantage, your win rate will go up by at least 10%. Guaranteed.
