How to Pick Your First Hero — and Actually Have Fun

By HOKMeta · Published 2026-01-15 · Updated 2026-08-07

Step 1: Pick Your Role Based on Playstyle

Don't pick a hero. Pick a role first. The role determines your playstyle more than the hero does.

If you like being the frontline, absorbing damage, and starting fights → play Clash Lane (Tank/Fighter).
If you like roaming the map, surprising enemies, and making big plays → play Jungle (Assassin/Fighter).
If you like doing huge damage from range and carrying late game → play Farm Lane (Marksman).
If you like controlling the battlefield with spells and burst damage → play Mid Lane (Mage).
If you like helping your team, setting up kills, and being the unsung hero → play Roam (Support).

Try each role for 3-5 games. You'll know which one feels right.

Step 2: Pick an Easy Hero in That Role

Once you have a role, pick the easiest hero in that role. Do not pick the coolest hero. Do not pick the hero you saw in a YouTube montage. Pick the easy one.

Easy heroes by role:
• Clash Lane: Arthur (tanky, simple abilities, hard to kill)
• Jungle: Liu Bei (scales well, doesn't need to gank early)
• Mid Lane: Angela (straightforward combo, high damage)
• Farm Lane: Luban No.7 (simple auto-attack based, teaches positioning)
• Roam: Sakeer (heals and shields, always useful even if you're behind)

Play 20-30 games on your easy hero. Learn the role. Learn the map. Learn the macro. Then you can start playing the harder, flashier heroes.

Stats from Camp HOK international ranked (synced 2026-08-07), cross-checked against HoKStats.gg builds and counters. 国服 (王者荣耀) runs on a faster patch cycle with a larger hero pool and different ban culture — use CN guides for mechanics and combos, but draft off global win/pick/ban numbers on this site.
